Earth Day Celebrations with 1K Women Strong

Apr 23, 2025

This Earth Day, 1K Women Strong showed up in communities like Flint, Michigan, and others across the South, because we know environmental justice is our fight and our future.

Across the country, Black women and families are disproportionately impacted by unsafe water, toxic air, climate disasters, and disinvestment. That’s why Environmental Justice is one of our core policy pillars, and why we’re building power at the ballot box, in our neighborhoods, and at the roots of the problem.

To celebrate Earth Day and build upon progress, we celebrated with the following events and days of service:

Flint, Michigan - Community Sustainability & Tree Planting
April 22 | 10 AM – 1 PM
Edible Flint Educational Farm, 1628 Beach St., Flint, Michigan, 48503
In partnership with the University of Michigan-Flint, a youth-led day of action featuring a farm tour, fruit tree planting, new flower beds, and a hands-on neighborhood clean-up.

Flint, Michigan - Rooted in Resilience: Flint's Earth Day Dialogue
April 22 | 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Gloria Coles Flint Public Library – Ennis Room
A 1K Women Strong-led roundtable highlighting how environmental policies shape our health, homes, and futures, with a spotlight on the 2026 elections, featuring activist Hubert Roberts, community voices, and a call to action for civic engagement.

Early Country, Georgia - Tree Planting
April 22 | 4pm Starting at Blakely City Hall
In Georgia, we’re partnering with the Early County Chamber of Commerce to lead a tree-planting initiative across five communities: Kali, Jakin, Blakely, Arlington, and Damascus, bringing sustainability and environmental justice to the heart of rural Georgia.

Texas: A Sacred Gathering to Reflect and Rise
April 27 | 5:30 – 7:30 PM
Katherine Rose Memorial Park
In Texas, 1000 Women Strong will close out Earth Week with the Second Annual Earth Day Soirée, a sacred ceremony under the open sky for 10 Black women to ground, release, and rise. This intimate gathering is an offering of renewal through nature, nourishment, and intentional connection—a reminder that like the Earth, Black women bloom, heal, and rise.

From public roundtables to private ceremonies, from tree plantings to policy discussions, this Earth Day, we’re showing up in different ways. Because environmental justice isn’t just about protecting the planet, it’s about protecting our people.

Together, we’re planting seeds of justice and growing power, from the ground up.
