We marched in community to honor our history and gain strength from one another.
1K Women Strong went to Selma, Alabama, to honor the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.
Our team had a powerful time at the Children's March in Selma and a rally at the Montgomery Capitol. We also brought friends and neighbors from Lumpkin and Columbus, Georgia, to Selma through a bus tour. We marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge during the Selma Jubilee to highlight and preserve our history while building community.
We ended the week with a special 1K Women Strong-sponsored reading with civil rights activist Dr. Opal Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Dr. Lee read from her own book, celebrating the power of storytelling in preserving history and inspiring future generations. Dr. Lee, an advocate for education and social justice, highlighted the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, the fight for voting rights and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
We give special thanks to the students and educators at Edgewood Elementary who hosted us, our brothers and sisters in service who marched with us, and all those whose legacies we celebrated last week.
We walked in the footsteps of history, together.
About 1K Women Strong
1K Women Strong is a national organizing hub for Black women and their allies. Through year-round community-building, rapid response messaging, issue advocacy and electoral mobilization, we are working across the U.S. to build sisterhood and political power for the long haul.
By creating a home for Black women, we ensure an impact on the issues that affect our lives. 1K Women Strong was founded by Shakya Cherry-Donaldson, evolving from her field work with Stacey Abrams, Deval Patrick and other grassroots leaders. We are focused on electoral matters, education campaigns, and advocacy issues.
