Public News Service: "In AL, 1K Women Strong mobilizes for health, equity and the ballot"

Apr 8, 2025

A national civic engagement group is sharpening its focus on Alabama as it works to engage Black women voters and tackle key issues in communities across the state.

The group 1000 Women Strong recently held its virtual 2025 State of Black Women event, outlining its strategy for voter engagement and leadership development. While the group operates in 10 states, organizers said Alabama remains a top priority this year, especially in rural areas where access and resources are limited.

Tania Johns, national organizing director for the group, said their approach is about meeting people where they are and building trust through direct contact.

"In 2024, we knocked on over 50,000 doors across Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina," Johns reported. "We made over 77,000 phone calls to rural voters because power isn't built where it's easy. It's built where it's needed most."

Johns noted they are maintaining a year-round presence in Alabama through outreach, voter education and policy organizing, with a focus on maternal health, Medicaid expansion, mental health care and rural hospital closures.
